An Yanga reviewed the achievements of the United Nations and the African Union in the field of peace and security on the African continent, and pointed out that the many challenges currently facing Africa, especially political instability, escalating conflicts, and worsening humanitarian crises in various regions, are still priority issues that need to be addressed.

He pointed out that cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union is crucial, and both sides are closely coordinating to jointly address conflicts and unstable situations in many regions of Africa. He specifically mentioned the threat of climate change to peace and security in Africa, pointing out that significant progress has been made in cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union in this field.

Despite facing severe challenges in Africa, Anyanga remains confident in the future of the continent, emphasizing the resilience and strong pursuit of democracy of the African people. He stated that despite facing many challenges, the revival of Africa is full of hope, and cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union is an important guarantee for promoting this process.

Significant milestone resolution

Poppy pointed out in his speech that the Security Council's adoption of Resolution 2719 in 2023 is an important milestone in the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union. This resolution supports African Union led peacekeeping operations, including peacekeeping and counter-terrorism tasks, and provides support through United Nations funding.

Since the resolution was passed, the United Nations Secretariat and the African Union Commission have established a joint working group to closely cooperate in promoting the implementation of the resolution. The two sides focused on key areas such as joint planning, task support, funding and budget, and compliance with international human rights law to ensure the effective implementation of African Union led peacekeeping operations.

Poppy specifically mentioned that the African Union's support and the Mali Stabilization Mission are expected to become the first peacekeeping mission implemented within the framework of Resolution 2719. She called on the Security Council, as well as member states of the United Nations and the African Union, to provide sustained support to ensure the successful deployment of African Union led peacekeeping operations and make substantial contributions to peace and security on the African continent.
