In March 2002, a management personnel of a securities company reported to the Economic Investigation Detachment of the Pudong Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau that their company manager, Wu, was suspected of embezzlement of duty. After investigation by the Pudong police, it was found that from 1999 to 2002, the company manager Wu, together with social personnel Xu and others, used the convenience of Wu's position to illegally use funds deposited by other companies of 210 million yuan (RMB, the same below) for stock trading. Xu sold the stocks and withdrew more than 6 million yuan in total.

After the incident, Wu was arrested by the Pudong police on suspicion of embezzlement and sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Pudong New Area People's Court in Shanghai; Before the incident, Xu fled to a Southeast Asian country with funds through illegal means, and the Pudong police immediately took online pursuit measures against him.

Although the suspect has fled abroad, the police have never abandoned their pursuit of Xu. During the pursuit, the police visited Xu's family several times and advised them to persuade him to return to China and surrender himself. At the same time, they actively sought the assistance of local police to investigate Xu's whereabouts overseas. In 2022, the police learned an important clue through Interpol channels: Xu is suspected to be living under the pseudonym Deng in Thailand.

After multiple comparisons and investigations, the police finally determined that Deng was Xu, who had fled overseas. So the police immediately rushed to a country in Southeast Asia to carry out pursuit and escape work. Under the coordination of multiple parties, Xu was arrested by the local police at his place of residence and sent back to China, where he was handed over to the Pudong police.

After arriving at the case, Xu confessed to his criminal facts without hesitation. "I can't sleep every night, I'm afraid the police will rush in and catch me". According to Xu, Xu has been hiding after absconding, and the huge mental pressure kept him awake at night. For the past 20 years, Xu has never dared to contact his family for fear of revealing his true identity. After squandering all the stolen money he carried, Xu could only use the pseudonym Deng to work and make a living in a certain country in Southeast Asia. The mental and life pressures had already overwhelmed him. In order to completely evade the pursuit of the police, he also tried to spend a lot of money to whitewash his identity, but was eventually discovered by the police.
